Turrican Flashback – Review

Blast from the past.

Once upon a time, most of us did not even know how to pronounce his name: "Tarikan" one, "Turaikan" the other… Most of us had never finished it. Such was his degree of difficulty and his brutal size, that the above project could take years.

But all of us were speechless with its quality and technical field. In fact, to such an extent that even today, everyone who played it (and even more) remembers it with love, admiration, respect and - why not - porosity. The reason for Turrican / Turikan, the game that started from the ancient Commodore 64 and conquered almost every platform.

The distant 1989 released the first level of the game in Demo. The reception image reminiscent of Manowar and Kings of Metal, combined with the graphics (mostly) of the game, left the world dazzled. Their level was really unprecedented for this machine and it usually left the mouths open, with some saliva running to the side.

When the machine was released in 1990, everyone finally believed it was a real achievement. Its success was such that the game soon made the leap to all the Home Computers of the time (Amiga, Atari ST, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum and even CDTV). In 1991 it became the port on Mega Drive and Game Boy, with the name of the creator Manfred Trenz, to be written in history.

As great as the Turrican was, its glory quickly faded, as its great success brought the release of the Turrican II, which was bigger and better in all areas. In addition, this game, in turn, left another name written in history, next to that of the creator - that of Chris Huelbeck, composer of the soundtrack of the series in Amiga - and more.

But the soundtrack of Turrican II was so amazing that it has since been considered one of the best, if not the best, of all time. To show the magnitude of its value, suffice it to say that this music was performed by a full symphony orchestra 13 years later at the Symphonic Game Music Concert Event in 2004 in Leipzig, Germany, while in 2013 the Turrican Soundtrack Anthology was released.
