WB Games Montreal confirmed in an interview with Gameradar that the Gotham Knights battle system will not be the same as the Arkham titles released. Recall that WB Games Montreal was the development studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins in 2013.
"We've completely redesigned the combat system to work well in co-op," said Title Exec Producer Fleur Marty during the interview. "Of course, we are still a title brawler and some of the engineers will not be completely foreign to the people who played and enjoyed the Arkham series, but they are very different in many ways."
Marty has confirmed that all four playable characters - Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl and Red Hood - will level up even if we choose to play only one character.
"Since the evolution of the story is shared between all the characters, it also makes sense that you do not need to raise them from scratch every time you want to change the character," Marty explained. "It also remains very consistent in terms of the narrative part."
"Once the other members of the Batman family are always present in some way in the background, while you are out in the world fighting crime or revealing the mystery, they do not remain inactive. Therefore, it is logical that they move forward and become stronger ".
Patrick Redding, Creative Director, for his part reaffirmed that Gotham Knights is the beginning of a new, original Batman story and is not related to the Arkham universe we know from previous titles.
"This is a universe that many of us on the team have invested in since we were old enough to read," Redding said. "The real test was when we started working with DC and started talking about what we wanted about the characters and stories and our specific explanations."
Concerned that the co-op title would result in a "game-as-a-service" like Marvel's Avengers or Destiny 2, WB Games Montreal confirmed last year that the game could be is played entirely solo and is designed for co-op, and not as a live always online game.
The Gotham Knights is expected to be available in 2021, for Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC.
